My personal path to health and wellness began when I first became a mother in my early 20’s. My inspiration was my child and wanting to provide the best internal and external environment to insure his health which meant that I needed to do what it takes to insure my own health.
After the birth of my second son, I made the decision to get my nursing degree from NHTI, in Concord, NH and became a Registered Nurse in 1992.
Unfortunately what I discovered was that there was not much focus on “health” in “healthcare”. I worked in many areas of nursing for 20+ years and witnessed and cared for many people with chronic diseases that were preventable.
I witnessed many people aging and dying before their time because of these preventable chronic diseases. These people did not have the knowledge or tools to prevent these diseases and most were of the mindset that their Doctor will take care of them and knew what was best for them. They did not take responsibility for their own care.
These experiences in my nursing career and living with my own health issues has and continues to inspire me to be my own health care manager and develop a passion to want to inspire others to do the same. I’m not suggesting that you don’t ever consult with your MD’s, but I do want to inspire others to take a bigger responsibility by investing in their own health and wellness by seeking out information from those who have the knowledge and skills to steer them in the right direction.
I chose to become a Practitioner in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) because of the holistic natural approach and proven effects of acupuncture and Chinese herbs and the philosophy that encourages wellness and balance to prevent disease from occurring. This role would give me the opportunity to care for, provide information and inspire others to take control of their own health. In early China TCM Doctors were paid to keep the wealthy healthy and if they became ill, the practitioner did not get paid, and in some instances when it came to Royalty, the practitioner was slain (the good ole days..).
During my years in Acupuncture school, I began experiencing new mysterious symptoms for which my MD as well as other specialists could not help me with. After countless MD visits, I decided I would try to figure out what was going on with my own body. I then began experiencing excruciating migraines with non-stop vomiting. They would come spontaneously without a pattern. After being handed 6 prescriptions and was told that “there are too many causes of migraines” to figure out what was causing mine, I decided that I would have to figure this one out on my own as well.
You see the difference is that I will not settle for answers or prescriptions just because they may not understand what is going on. That is not good medicine. Unfortunately, most people would take what the MD tells them and live with the suffering because they don’t have a choice.
I did eventually discover the cause of all of my symptoms, “gluten” through my own investigation. I apparently developed a gluten sensitivity that was causing inflammation in my body contributing to my symptoms. Today I no longer have migraines or those other mysterious symptoms. This is not something my doctors would have discovered because conventional medicine generally does not believe gluten is a problem unless you are diagnosed with Celiac Disease.
I chose to share my experiences with others to help people understand my passion for health and wellness, but also to help those who also may be suffering from mysterious symptoms that are not being addressed by their MD. If this describes you, I would encourage you to seek the advice of a Functional Medicine MD. They are trained to discover the cause and not just cover it up with prescriptions. Good Luck!
